7 Best Pedals for Blues (2021 List)

If you're a guitar player looking for the best pedals to use while playing blues, then this post is for you. We'll go over 7 of the best pedals and what they do so that you can find one that fits your needs. These are all quality brands with good reputations, made by people who know what they're doing when it comes to making guitar gear.

#1 Pick: TS9 Tube Screamer

Pro:

  • Iconic pedal, proven over decades of use

Con:

  • Mid Hump

Why is this the Best Pedal for Blues?

The TS9 is as iconic as a guitar pedal gets.  It's a pedal that found its way on to the pedal board of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, John Mayer, Gary Clark Jr, and Joe Bonamassa, so you know there has to be something special about it.

The tube screamer is perfect for blues overdrive.  It can range all the way from just a touch of overdrive to add a little warmth, to being driven to the point of classic rock.  Somewhere in the middle is the perfect blues spot.

One of the Iconic things about a Tube Screamer is that is disproportionately boosts the mids over the lows and highs.  This is a big point of contention for many guitarists because some people find it to be the worst thing ever, and some people like it.  It is all a preference thing, so give the TS9 a listen and decide for yourself.

All of this and more is why the TS9 is a must have guitar pedal and one of the best pedals for blues.

Mini Version

There is also a mini version of the Tube Screamer that costs a little less and takes up less space on a pedal board.  If you want your pedalboard to weigh a little less on your wallet, or you want to fit more pedals on it.  Then this is one of the best blues pedals for you.

Boss Blues Driver

Why is this the Best Pedal for Blues?

The Boss Blues Driver has been the main competitor of the Tube Screamer for decades.  They sound super similar.  The biggest difference between the two is that The Blues Driver doesn't boost the mids at all.

One of the best things about these pedals is that they last through a lifetime of use.  Because of that you can often to on resale websites and find them for $50 or so, which is a nuts deal for this quality of pedal.  This is definitely the best pedal for blues that you can find for under $50 or $60.

It is overall just a great drive pedal, and this list would be incomplete without the addition of it.

Fulltone OCD

Why is this the Best Pedal for Blues?

This pedal has a little bit of a heavier sound than the other pedals on this list.  This pedal can border on more of a distortion pedal rather than an overdrive, so if you are someone that really likes the heavier genres of music, but also wants to play the blues, this could be a great pedal for you.

With that said, this pedal would be ideal for someone that wants to play Stevie Ray Vaughan style blues.  This pedal helps create that super overdriven amp sound.

This pedal is great at sounding like an authentic overdriven amp.  If that is the sound you want, then this is the best pedal for blues for you.

Xotic EP Boost

Why is this the Best Pedal for Blues?

Boost pedals are becoming more and more popular within the blues realm.  This is mostly because of their convenience.  It is incredibly easy to just kick on a nice little clean boost to enhance you sound, and get you ready for solos.

This pedal is not only a boost, but can also be used in an overdrive sense as well.  Once the one and only knob is turned about to about 12 O'Clock, this pedal begins create a tight overdrive sound.  This is great for blues because it boosts your signal enough to get the notes heard, but also it just adds a touch of grit to you sound.

Boost pedals in general are a must, but getting a high quality one like this right away will pay dividends for years and years to come.  This pedal is killer in a blues context, but also works amazing in almost every other musical context as well.

Electro Harmonix Canyon

Why is this the Best Pedal for Blues

The Canyon is a Looper/Delay/Reverb pedal that offers a ton of versatility and a ton of different tonal options.  In addition to the looper, it comes with 11 different types of delay and reverb.  These allow for you to alter your sound to an extreme extent.

Some people really like to add some delay to their sound when playing the blues because it beefs up your sound a little bit.  Often times blues is played cleanly through a single coil guitar, and sometimes that signal can sound a little weak, so delay is a good way to make your sound a little more powerful.

Overall, this is an amazingly versatile pedal that can be used super effectively in a blues context.  That makes this the best delay pedal for blues.

Ultraphonix Overdrive

This pedal was created with the intent of getting the iconic sound of a Dumble amp into a pedal.  Dumble amps are the most sought after amps in the entire world.  Used amps regularly go for over $100,000 at auctions.

This pedal does a super good job of replicating that Incredible sound, but you won't need to sell your house to get it.

Tommy Castro is one of the guitarists responsible for putting this pedal on the map.  He has been a big advocate for this pedal since he discovered it in 2015.

FAQ:

What pedals do I need for blues?

The real answer is that you don't need any pedals for blues.  Often times you can get away with just using an amp and its built in overdrive.  However, if you elect to use pedals, something like an Ibanez Tube Screamer is a great place to start.

How do I get the blues tone on my guitar?

The blues tone for guitar is very simple.  Typically just a guitar plugged straight into an amp.  Maybe with a simple overdrive on top of the signal too.  The truth is that the tone of the blues is mostly in the fingers of the player.  B.B. King could make a cheap guitar and an amp sound 100 times bluesier than I could make a super expensive pro rig.

Is a Tube Screamer good for blues?

A Tube Screamer is a great option for blues guitar.  It has been used by tonnes of legends, like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy, and even more modern bluesmen such as Gary Clark Jr, John Mayer, and Joe Bonamassa.

Why is this the Best Guitar for 7 Year Old?

The Yamaha JR1 is a great guitar for a child that wants to start out on an acoustic guitar.  One of the biggest advantages of starting a kid out on acoustic guitar is that you won't have to pay for all the other things that you need for electric guitar.  Like cables and amplifiers.

Another thing that is great about starting a child on an acoustic guitar is that the pressure required to push down the strings is greater, so they develop stronger fingers much faster than children that start out on an electric guitar.

There really is no right or wrong answer for if you should start your child on electric guitar or acoustic guitar.  The best thing to do is figure out what will get your child excited to play, and get them the one that best fits them.

Because of this though the Mini Taylor is perfect for children as well, and it gives them an opportunity to play a professional level guitar.

These small size classical guitars are perfect for children with smaller hands. They also make excellent travel guitars that won't take up too much space in your luggage when you're traveling.

Why is this the Best Guitar for 7 Year Old?

This Yamaha classical guitar is a great choice for a child that is just starting out.  The biggest difference between this guitar and all the other ones on this list is that the strings on this guitar are made of nylon rather than a metal.

Pressing down nylon strings requires a lot less strength, and this will make playing easier.  This also ensures that your child's fingers don't hurt from playing.  When you first start playing guitar, you fingers aren't used to the constant pressure of the strings, and this makes your fingers hurt.

Overall this is a great choice to start a child out on, but just be aware that they will likely want a change soon because they will want a guitar that sounds like the ones on the radio.

The Infinity R pickups are designed with ceramic magnets for a higher output while maintaining clarity of tone even at high volume levels.

Low Action: Low action makes playing fast licks easier because there's less distance between strings and fretboard for your fingers to cover in order to reach each note accurately. With low action you'll also find yourself playing cleaner notes more often than not since there's less room for error.

Short Scale Neck: The scale length on this guitar is 22.2 inches which certainly on the shorter side of this list.  That makes this guitar one of the best options for small children hands.

Why is this the Best Guitar for 7 Year Old?

The Ibanez MiKro is a guitar that will be more suited towards genres like rock or metal.  So if that is what your child is into,  you should really consider this guitar.

Often times rock and metal guitars have thinner necks which makes it easier for children with small hands to play them, and this is the case with the Ibanez MiKro.

This is another trusted brand making a tiny guitar that is intended for children, so you know you are getting the real thing.  It isn't a toy that is poorly made by someone that has no idea what they are doing.

Buying a Guitar for a Child Guide

Finding the best guitar for kids can be a challenge. Learning to play an instrument is important, but there are lots of options and you want to make sure that you don't spend money on something that they won't like or use. In this blog post I will share some of my favorite guitars for Kids.

Finding the best guitar for a 5 year old is very different than finding the best guitar for a 10 year old.  The size difference of those two ages is immense, and that is why we will be giving recommended minimum ages for all the guitars we talk about today, so you can find the best kids guitar for sale

Starting your child down the path to musicality early can lead to great success for them later in life.  When kids are young their brains are like a sponge that soaks up everything.

Allowing them to have experiences with music early on can lead to them having a much stronger base of understanding than kids that start when they are around 10 years old.  Victor Wooten, a man many consider to be the greatest bass player of all time says all the time how he first had contact with a bass guitar at the age of Two.  The earlier the better!

Best Guitars for Kids List

#1 Best Electric Guitar for Kids: Mini Squier Strat

The Mini Squier Stratocaster is a smaller version of the legendary Fender Stratocaster.  The Stratocaster was famously played by players like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and John Mayer, so your child will be in good company.

Why is this the Best Guitar for Kids?

The Mini Squier Stratocaster rises above all the other children's guitars as the best for a few reasons.

The first is that this is the real deal.  An actual functioning electric guitar.  The vast majority of children's guitars are simply just cheap toys.  This is not the case with the Mini Stratocaster.  One of the reasons it is the best electric guitar for kids is because it is just like a real guitar, but just smaller.

Another reason why this is the best guitar for kids is that it will last them a long time.  This instrument can be played for years and years before needing an upgrade.  The miniature size of it lends itself to being perfect for children ages 4-12.  That's 8 years of learning until you might even need an upgrade.

Why is this the Best Guitar for Kids?

This guitar is great for young children because of its small size.  I have seen many children successfully learn to play on these guitars.  They are kinda the standard acoustic guitar for children to learn on.

An advantage of purchasing an acoustic guitar for your child is that you won't need to purchase all the other things that go along with an electric guitar.  Like an amplifier and cables.

This guitar is kinda like a fast ball right down the middle.  It's exactly the type of guitar you would expect a child to learn on.

Best Nylon String Guitar for Kids: Yamaha CGS

Why is this the Best Guitar for Kids?

This guitar is great for small children because is super small, and has strings that are very easy to press down.

Nylon strings require the least amount of strength to play, and this makes them perfect for children, or honestly anyone just starting out.  Many people that try to play guitar stop playing because of how much their fingers hurt.  Nylon strings should help prevent that.

This guitar is very small compared to a conventional guitar, so that also makes it idea for children.  The small size will make it far easier for the child to control the instrument.

Low Price: At only $79, the Loog Mini is an affordable way to get your child started on the road to becoming a rock star.

Why is this the Best Guitar for Small Kids?

The Loog Mini Guitar is a great guitar for small kids because it offers them a good introduction to musical instruments while having the durability of a toy.

Typically guitars are fragile items, but this it not the case with the Loog Mini Guitar.  The developers of this instrument know that kid's toys often times end up getting hit and smashed all around, so they made it durable.

This is the perfect hybrid of toy and real instrument.  It can teach your child about music while they are comfortable and having fun.

Best Guitar for Small Rockers: Ibanez Micro
Recommended Age: 6+

Pro:

  • Thin neck makes pushing down strings easier

Con:

  • Poor tuning stability
Key Features:

Humbucker Pickups: The Infinity R pickups in the GRGM21M are humbucker pickups.  Humbuckers are the pickup style used in rock and roll, metal, and other harder genres.  They can also be used for things like jazz, but are known mostly for rock and metal.

Small Size: The Mikro is small but perfectly formed. It's just right for younger players or anyone who wants a more compact guitar for travel or playability.

Long Lasting: All Ibanez guitars are built with the finest woods and hardware, plus they're set up by craftsmen at the factory in Japan before being inspected again by a Quality Control staff here in America.

Why is this the Best Guitar for Kids?

This is another three quarters sized guitar that would be perfect for children.  Just like the Mini Strat, this guitar will fit in the hands of a kid super well.  The fretboard is also compact.  This makes reaching for notes far easier, and improves fretboard mobility.

What really sets this guitar apart from the Stratocaster is that it has humbucking pickups rather than single coil pickups.  Pickups are the strips of magnets underneath the strings.

Humbucker pickups are used in genres like rock and metal.  They output more signal than single coil pickups, and because of that they have a powerful and warm sound.  Perfect for genres like rock and metal.

So think of this as the Strat's more metal counter-part.

Premium Acoustic Guitar: Mini Taylor
Recommended Age: 7+

Pro:

  • Extremely high quality

Con:

  • Pricey
Key Features:

Extreme quality: Taylor is a very well respected brand, known for their high-quality instruments. This guitar has been designed with everyone from the beginner to the professional in mind. Why is this the Best Guitar for Kids?

Mini Taylors are not only some of the best guitars for kids, but they are also one of the best guitars for beginners in general.

The Mini Taylor is small enough to fit into the hands of a child, but sophisticated enough of an instrument to be played for a lifetime.

If you want to get a guitar that can last your child their whole life, this is the one to get.

Premium Electric Guitar: Sterling Cutlass
Recommended Age: 8+

Pro:

  • Different pickup options allow for more tonal possibilities

Con:

  • Not as small as other guitars on list
Key Features:

HSS Pickup Configuration: The Sterling Cutlass Guitar features a humbucker in the bridge position for maximum output with two single coils in the neck and middle positions. This pickup combination offers flexibility of sound allowing you to switch from a warm clean tone to pokey crisp guitar without changing the amp at all.

Shortscale Neck: The short scale length makes it easy to play for musicians who have smaller hands or those who are just learning how to play guitar. It also allows for easier string bending as well.

Cool Look: I really dig the aesthetic of this guitar.  It has a uniqueness, yet is still within the range of acceptable looking guitars.  Just a super cool looking guitar.

Why is this the Best Guitar for Kids?

This is a great premium option for kids that are looking to play guitar.  Starting your child off with a high quality guitar is a good idea because it will last longer, and play easier.

If the guitar plays easier, your child is far more likely to stick with the instrument and continue to progress. The easier the instrument makes the process the better.  So many kids quit because of the difficulty.

If you were looking for the best electric guitar for kids, this is it.  It's got it all.

Cordoba Ukulele
Recommended Age: 4+

Pros:

  • Cheaper than guitar
  • Easier to play than a guitar

Con:

  • Not a guitar...
Key Features:

Nylon Strings: The nylon strings of a ukulele are far easier for children to push down and play.  Making it so that your child can advance quicker.

Small Size: The size of a ukulele is obviously much smaller than a guitar.  This makes it a great alternative for small children.  It will still introduce them to some of the same concepts as a guitar, but will be easier for them to handle.

Low Price Tag: The price of a nice uke is far less than the price of a nice guitar.  You can get a super high quality ukulele for 1/4 the price you can get a super high quality guitar.

Why is this a Good Option for Kids?

A ukulele is a great alternative for a guitar.  They will fit into the hands of a child much better, and will be easier to play.

The only fall back is that if the plan is to eventually move the child on to guitar, they will have to relearn a lot because the instruments are formatted very differently.

Regardless, if you are buying a guitar for a child, but you don't think they are big enough for it.  Maybe just go with a Uke.

Luna Ukulele
Recommended Age: 4+

Pro:

  • Plays very well

Con:

  • Not intonated very well.

This is simply another option if you are looking for a Ukulele.  It plays very similarly to the Cordoba Ukelele.  The choice between the two of them is really a preference thing.  I'm just giving you another option.

Best Amp for Rock Under 1000: Marshall DSL40

Pros:

  • Huge Sound
  • Pro Level Amplifier
  • All Tube

Cons:

  • Not ideal for clean playing
Key Features:

Ultimate Dirty Amp: The Marshall DSL40C is the ultimate rock amplifier. Gain and volume per channel. Dedicated resonance control. 2 separate master volume controls Reverb. High and low power settings Now with Celestion V type speaker Softube Emulated output 4 x ECC83 and 2 x EL34 valves

Two Channel Amplifier: The gain on the Marshall DSL40C can be adjusted independently for each of its two channels, which means you can set your clean tone to be crystal clear at lower volumes while still having enough grunt when you need it. This gives you a huge range of tones that are ideal for everything from classic blues to modern metal or anything in between!

Resonance Control:
Resonance adds depth and character to your sound but too much resonance makes it difficult to cut through a mix so there is a dedicated knob just for this purpose on the Marshall DSL40.  This allows you to add as much or as little resonance as needed.

Why is this the Best Guitar Amp Under 1000?

The Marshall DSL40 is an amazing amp for someone that really wants to rock out.  The overdrive settings on this amp sound exactly like all the classic rock records you know and love.  From Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood to AC/DC's Highway to Hell.  This amp will give you exactly what you are looking for.

The one 12 inch speaker within the DSL40 moves a ton of air.  The amp has no apprehension about making people ears ring through the power of sound.  Because of that, this amp will get you through any bar gig or small club gig just fine.

This amp is certainly the metal amp under 1000 and the best rock amp under 1000.

Best British Voiced Amp: Vox AC15

Pros:

  • Authentic Vintage Sound
  • Looks Pretty
  • Pretty versatile

Cons:

  • The Vox sound isn't for everyone
Key Features:

Two VX10 Speakers: Two custom designed 10 inch speakers deliver a powerful punch and vintage sound that is perfect for any style of music. This Vox amp also features two channels with classic VOX Top Boost tone controls: Normal and Top Boost. The Normal channel delivers a warm, clean sound while the Top Boost channel adds more gain for rock ‘n roll crunch.

Great for Pedals: The Vox AC30 can be used with pedals or without thanks to its built-in effects loop which allows you to hook up your favorite stomp boxes and let them rip through this legendary amplifier!

30 Watts: 30 Watts is the perfect amount for someone that wants to play anywhere from clean to edge of breakup.  The amp can be pushed easily to breakup, but can also be kept clean for a long time.

Why is this the Best Guitar Amp Under 1000?

The Vox AC15 is an amp that some consider to be the best guitar amp under 1000, but an amp that some consider utter rubbish.  The Vox sound is kinda polarizing due to its uniqueness.

What makes Vox amps special is their sound that is often described as "Jangly" or "Chime-Like".  The reason Vox amps have this unique sound is because they do not use a negative feedback loop like the other large amplifier brands.

This amp is ideal for someone that is really into that "vintage" guitar sound.  Vox amps naturally feel vintage to us because they were the sound of a lot of music that was made in the 60's.  During this time British bands were making hit after hit, and all these British bands were using the British made Vox amps.

Best Amp for Blues: Fender DeVille 212

Pros:

  • Huge Volume Range
  • Sounds Great clean or dirty
  • Classic Fender Tone

Cons:

  • Very Heavy
Key Features:

Two 12 Inch Speakers: The Hot Rod Deville 212 IV is loaded with two custom-voiced, Celestion Type-A speakers that deliver a lot of punch for their size. They'll handle everything from the warmest clean tones to the grittiest overdrive you can throw at them.

Fender Reverb: This amp features Fender's classic spring reverb for authentic surf and rockabilly sounds. It also has an effects loop so you can use your favorite pedals or rack processors in conjunction with your amplifier.

Iconic Tone: The Hot Rod DeVille 212 IV is the perfect choice for gigging guitarists who want the classic tone and performance of a Fender tube amp without breaking the bank.

Why is this the Best Guitar Amp Under 1000?

The Fender Deville is an amp that is often times overshadowed by other Fender amps like the Hot Rod Deluxe or the Twin Reverb.  Quite frankly though, there is no reason for that to be the case.  The DeVille is just as much amp as both of these, and in some ways outperforms them.

The best part about the DeVille is its ability to provide great tone in both a clean context as well as a dirty context.  It sounds great in the context of Nile Rodgers style funk guitar, and great in the context of Stevie Ray Vaughan style dirty blues.

I personally use this amp as my main amplifier.  I love the sound, and I don't think there are many better amps within this price range.  It is one of the best tube combo amps under 1000 today.

Best Solid State Amplifier: Roland JC40

Pros:

  • Versatile
  • Low Maintenance
  • Classic Sound

Cons:

  • Many prefer the tube sound
Key Features:

Two 10 Inch Speakers: This Roland guitar amp is equipped with two custom-designed 10 inch speakers, which deliver a clear and powerful sound.

Built in Effects: The JC40 also features built in chorus and vibrato effects, which add depth to your guitar tone. These classic effects are very versatile, allowing you to create everything from subtle background textures to dramatic swells that will make your guitar stand out.

Classic sound:
With its warm clean tone and famous stereo chorus effect, the Roland JC40 has been a favorite among players for decades. If you’re looking for a pro level solid state amp, this is it!

Why is this the Best Guitar Amp Under 1000?

The JC40 is best for a non metal player that wants great tone, but doesn't want to put up with the maintenance of a tube amplifier.  Or maybe someone that wants a reliable amp to gig with.  Musicians will often opt for a solid state amp for gigging because they are a ton lighter than their tube counterpart's

The JC40 is great for players in the realm of jazz, blues, funk, soul, or R&B.  The solid state sound lends itself to sounding great in these genres specifically.

The JC40 is an offshoot of the famous Roland JC120.  The most famous solid state amp ever.  Players have been trusting these amps for decades, and will continue to for many years into the future.

Best for Jazz: Bugera V55 Infinium

Pros:

  • Amazing Clean Tone
  • Hand Built Amp
  • Very Pretty

Cons:

  • Not Versatile
Key Features:

One 12 Inch Speaker: The British voiced Turbsosound speaker is ideal for pure clean tones.  This makes it perfect for genres like jazz, funk, and soul.  Giving you punchy mids and crisp highs.

Two Input Amplifier: This amp comes with two inputs labeled "Normal" and "Bright".  The bright input adds a little extra to your high ends to allow the guitar to cut through mixes easier.

Great Breakup Tones:  The Bugera V55 has to be pushed a little bit to break up, but once it does, the sound is glorius.  This amp is great for anything from the cleanest of cleans to dirty blues.

Why is this the Best Amp Under 1000?

This is another amp that is best for players that prefer to play cleanly rather than gritty.

It takes a lot to push this amp to the point of breaking up, but once it does it has a very nice edge of breakup sound.  I like that it takes a long time to break up.  Then I can play this amp super lead cleanly which is very nice for situations like a loud jazz jam.

Overall, this is a super cool amp that doesn't get the shine it deserves, and if you are interested at all, I would highly suggest checking this amp out further.

Honorable Mention: Fender Blues Junior

Pros:

  • Trusted for Decades
  • Low Priced Tube Amp
  • Celestion Speaker

Cons:

  • Cannot be played clean loudly.
Key Features:

15 Watts: The Fender Blues Junior IV is the most versatile and gig-friendly amp in the series. It's also one of the best-sounding amps ever made, thanks to its 12" Special Design speaker and high-gain preamp circuitry.

Modified Preamp Circuity: This modified circuit design gives players a broader tonal palette with more gain on tap for searing leads and fat, creamy textures.

Fender Reverb: A smoother sound characterizes this updated version of Fender's all-time classic spring reverb, which features controls for volume and tone as well as damping to allow players to create their ideal ambience.

Why is this the Best Guitar Amp Under 1000?

For starters this amp is a part of the Fender Hot Rod line.  The best selling amplifier line of all time.  Two other amps from that line made this list as well.

This is an amp that is not only trusted by bedroom players, but also by top guitarists.  The Edge of U2 has been known to use Fender Blues Juniors to record with, and they can be heard on some of U2's most popular songs.

Also this amp comes in at a price that is well under 1000.  It is nearly half the price of most of the other amps on this list, but it has all the tone of them.  Due to its great tone, and lightweight nature it is the best gigging amp under 1000.

Honorable Mention: Tone Master Twin Reverb

Pros:

  • Super Light
  • Low Maintenance
  • Great tone for Solid state

Cons:

  • Expensive for solid state
  • Tone isn't as good as the real Twin Reverb
Key Features:

Two 12 Inch Speakers: The Twin reverb is a 2x12" combo amp, featuring two custom-designed 12" Jenson speakers.

Tube Emulation: This digital amplifier features Fender's patented "Dynamic Tube Circuitry" (DTC), which gets very close to the sound of a tube power amplifier. It uses an all-new proprietary design that delivers the same warm, rich tone and response as vintage tube amplifiers.

Light Weight: At 43 lbs, this amp is is nearly half the weight of the all tube Fender Twin Reverb.  It is so much easier to carry around.  Lugging around an 80 pound amp is absolutely no fun.

Why is this the Best Guitar Amp Under 1000?

The Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb is a modern twist on a classic amp.  It is about the closest I have ever heard a solid state amp sound to a tube amp, but still there is a noticeable difference.

I think this is a great amp for gigging musicians because solid state amps are nice and light to carry around, also they break far less.  There is nothing worse than having something go wrong with your amp on a gig, and not knowing what to do.

So if you are a gigging musician looking for a solid state amp that can keep up in a live setting, look no further.
